10th Statement – Larry Cumming (President: Peterson Corporation)

Last Monday I was afforded the privilege to join in a dinner held locally to acknowledge the purchase of the 10th Peterson Delimber-Debarker-Chipper by LV Dohnt & Co based in Nangwarry South Australia. Our initial business contact with Phillip Dohnt dates back to 1999 when he purchased two 5000G models for a contract in Oberon NSW chipping softwood pulp logs roadside. Since then Phillip has been a regular customer for this mobile chipping plant and we together with our Australian dealer, Komatsu Forest, are soon to install the 10th example of this uniquely specialised machine. Over the years we have watched his business grow to the point where he now is the largest private infield chipping contractor in the world with an annual volume approaching 1.2m GMT/year. LV Dohnt & Co is not content to just be a good customer, they have been an active participant in developing this product that was never originally designed for Australian Blue Gums & I can assure you that input at Peterson is highly valued. Many of the features & innovations we see on today’s machines have been driven by Phillip & his competent staff.

All of us at Peterson thank Phillip for his business over the last 16 years & wish LV Dohnt and staff a safe and successful future.

Yours Sincerely,
Larry Cumming – President (Peterson Corp)

Statement - Mal Windrim (Peterson Corporation)

Tonight we are here to acknowledge the handover of the 10th Peterson 5000 that LV Dohnt has purchased, I feel I’m qualified to speak about the interaction between LV Dohnt & Peterson Pacific because I’ve been involved in every one of those purchases spanning the past 16 years.
Before I get into it I’d like to thank you all for attending tonite especially my Boss Mr Larry Cumming who’s come out from the States to ensure we do it properly & to Komatsu Forest for organising the venue ect which is entirely appropriate given the special interest of Phil & Narissa in the local viticulture industry.

Now I have a note here from Jack Nantz who asked me to read it at an appropriate time;  Jack mentioned that Australia was home to 11% of all 5000’s produced but when you look at H-series alone we have 30% of them down under & LVD has 23% of those.

I’ll touch briefly about the development of the 5000 for Eucalyptus applications. The 1st few machines in Eucs had a feed speed of 93’/min, I recall discussing with Phillip the specifications of the last G series m/c he bought & we both wanted to up the ante. By going to a 4 pocket disc & changing the sheave combination that m/c ran at 110’/min. The m/c about to be delivered will run at 145’/min, make better chips with less bark at lower engine speed using less fuel. (or so Yonny promised). How did the m/c develop this far? The answer is mainly by listening to owners like LV Donht & copying their good ideas. When I look at the m/c today I see; Karl Dohnt spout – Les Walkden floor – Michael Giles hoods, Neil Peterson veins – Dick Skoczen steps & so on. What we’ve got from LVD more recently is; spout & throat cameras, flail speed sensors & stall warning – a new sheave combination & the evolution go on, I can’t wait to see your 20th m/c. That’s enough about machines, whilst you can get attached to machines its people that count. Jack said he appreciated your business, I say repeat business is the best business you can get but Jack also said friendship was more important. I know we stretched that bond we had thru equipment with your 1st 5000H but we never lost the friendship & I knew if we could improve the m/c & fix the major issues you’d give us another chance: that was 3 machines ago now. With that I’ll finish up & let some of the more eloquent speakers take the floor (thankfully I’m before Yonny) Once again thank you all for joining us tonite, thanks for your business Phillip but more importantly thanks for being a friend to both Peterson & myself.
